What's the best thing about having family only a couple of hours away? They come to visit often! For Labor Day, Devan and Kim and Naaman and Ellie came up for a night of camping. We had expected cooler weather, but it was still pretty steamy, and when we pulled up we found out about the fire ban and broken water line at the park, so we considered aborting, but the kids were too excited so we decided to stick it out.
Ben made a dutch oven chicken pot pie (on the cement), and we had raw s'mores (which are so much less messy!). Ben and Devan provided the entertainment for the evening:

I like camping in the fall, because it gets dark (and cooler) early, so
the kids don't know what time it is, and go to bed early. The adults went to lay with the kids to help them be calm, but we ended up falling asleep too, so we were all well-rested in the morning! (Maybe Ben wasn't. All his bedding ended up on children. He woke up early to fix a dutch oven egg and sausage breakfast, which was delicious.) After we ate, we explored the lake for a while, which was at a much higher level than it was the last time we camped there. Thank you, spring rain, for bringing our lake back!
Scott had time to train his padowan in the proper care and use of his camping equipment. He drew the line at letting him sleep in his tent with him, though.
It was a fun little trip, and we were happy to have company to share it with!
