Happy New Year!

So, you may recall that I have a habit of not taking any pictures on New Year's Eve.  I resolve to change that!  Here you go!

This picture is to capture what our house often looks like when all kids are home for more than a day together.  Blankets and pillows on the floor.  Plates on the table (which is not allowed except on holidays...)  Toys, shoes, books, games, and other goodies strewn around everywhere.  The storage bins are our Christmas decorations that we put away earlier in the week, so at least that was done!

Everyone tried to stay up as long as they could, but these two just didn't quite make it to midnight. (I posted this picture on Facebook, and it was quite well received. ☺)

Once the others started celebrating, everyone woke up and blew horns and popped poppers and ate a few more snacks.

Then we all went to bed!  Hooray!

The next day was Timmy's first birthday, so Caytie made him a present--Cheerios in a toilet paper tube wrapped in tissue paper.  He loved it.

On to 2018.  Should be a good one!

Ice Skating

We found a family activity on the last Saturday of 2017 that EVERYONE loved--ice skating!  We've had mixed success with it in the past, but this time, we had a really good time.

(Gracie had a bump on her foot that bothered her a lot.)

Then after about two hours, half the kid's feet started to hurt so they wanted to leave, but the other half didn't, and everyone got hungry, but no one wanted to eat at the same place, and my hives flared up really badly with my clothes rubbing on my cold skin, and Ben's back started to ache from bending down to help Benson, so...we left.  But everyone remembers it as a great day, and Scott even took some friends there a couple weeks later for a double (triple?) date.  We shall do this again.

Gracie's Gifts are Fun!

Merry Christmas to All!

(Gracie asked for a hair crimper.  It didn't take long for all the girls to match!)

Christmas Eve

We had a lovely Sunday.  We (Scott, Emma, Gracie and I) sang with the choir at church (Ben accompanied one of the songs), and then we had a nice day at home.  We put together a couple puzzles, ate tasty food, and then at the end of the day, we read about the birth of Jesus in the Bible, exchanged our family gifts and watched "It's a Wonderful Life," which none of the kids had seen.

I'm trying out the earrings my girls gave me--fish bowls!  And I'm trying not to move much, which would irritate hives.  (My ear is red from them.)

Tessa let me play with her hair during the movie. ☺

After the movie, all little Ropers headed off to bed.  Santa got busy (and only needed one break for an oatmeal bath) and had everything ready for the next morning.  Our poor tree lost more lights, and my friend Kate gave us a Tree Dazzler, which is strands of lights you hook on the top and drape down the tree, and has several light displays programed into it.  Here is the red:

And here is the green:

Now time for sweet dreams of dancing sugar plums!

Christmas Adam

The girls built a fort for Benson and he was super comfy in it.

Turns out, he was sick with a fever, and was soon asleep.  Poor guy.

The girls and Ben celebrated Christmas Adam by going to the mall and getting a few last minute gifts.  I bought liquid Benadryl and took an oatmeal bath and then a nap.

That evening, I took the girls to a Christmas sing-a-long we'd been invited to.
We had some good snacks and hot chocolate, and then we sang as long as I could stand it (my feet and hands were sooooo itchy, and it was starting up onto my face again), and it was a good way to bring in the Sabbath Christmas Eve.

How to Host a Murder

The crew: Alex, Cody, Olivia, Angela, Scott
Andrew, Angela, Taylor

Ben and I served them dinner (lemon pepper chicken, salad, cilantro rice, veggies, and French bread with Brie--and some sort of dessert that I've forgotten).  Then they got into the game.  It was fun, because they all played their parts well, and the end was a surprise for everyone!  I was suffering from hives, so I did my duties and then hid out trying not to scratch.

I'm grateful Scott has these friends!

H I V E S

On December 21st, I went to my book club for our annual book exchange and treats.  There's not much to report about this, except that it was where the first of some hives began to form on my elbows.  They stayed pretty contained on my elbows and knees (the usual starting points), and I went home and went to bed, expecting that they'd be gone in the morning, since I did a good job of not scratching them.

I am fairly used to getting hives.  I had them a lot for a year or two when I was in elementary school.  When we went to the doctor, she said, "You're allergic to something."  (So helpful.)  I never was able to pinpoint anything that would trigger the hives to begin.  It usually began on my elbows and knees, and if I could keep from scratching, they'd usually fade away.  If I scratched, they'd spread along my arms and legs, and then they'd last for two or three days.  I could keep them from itching with baking soda/water paste on the spots, or if it got really bad, a bath with lots of baking soda would help, along with a dose of liquid Benadryl.  I had them only a very few times in high school and college.  Once I got them really bad on my mission, for several days.  Since I've been married, I'll get them once or twice in a year, and then go several years without any.  It seemed that instead of being an allergic reaction, it was often triggered after a stressful event, like my body was releasing toxins.  That still may be the case.  I guess December (and, well, all of the fall) had been a bit high in stress, but not really more than other times, and having the kids out of school and Christmas a few days away doesn't really seem like the END of a stressful event.

Anyway.  The hives did not go away the next day.  They were worse.  They spread up my arms and down my legs and onto my hands and feet, and up onto my neck and onto my face.  It was pretty miserable.  I only had Benadryl pills, and they don't seem to do the same job as the liquid for my hives, and they make me so drowsy!  But we had to get the house ready for Scott's How to Host a Murder party that night, so I just sucked it up and went to work.  I happened to have some oatmeal bath packets that I had purchased for Tessa, and used two of them that night, and they helped sooth and calm the hives down a lot.  I was really hoping they'd be gone the next day.

Spoiler: they weren't gone the next day, or the next or next or next....  This turned into the worst case of hives I have ever had.  I'll be referring to them as I report on the activities of our December and yes, into January.  So--awesome!

Christmas Cookies--Check!

After school let out for Christmas, we had a couple friends over for a last minute sleep over when their mom had to go to the hospital.  We made the best of the situation the next day by making cookies!  We used a kit for reindeer first:

Then all creativity came out for the rest of the cookies:

It always takes a good chunk of time (and a good chunk of my cookie decorating supplies--and any hope for a clean kitchen), and I think they had a pretty good time.

42

When I was in high school, 42 year olds seemed really, really old.  Maybe high schoolers still think that, but now that I'm here, I don't feel nearly as old as I perceived I would.

Ben had a surprise up his sleeve: he found a recipe for homemade key lime pie--and he made it for me!

Benson had a big dentist appointment on my birthday.  He had a root canal on his back molar, and the molar in front of it was pulled.  He didn't really enjoy the experience.  I had to hold his hands and legs, even though he had the gas.  Since the decay was the same on the other side and also needed a root canal and extraction, I assumed it would be done then, but alas, she only did the one side.  He got a large chocolate milkshake afterward, so that the return appointment would be less feared.

I spent a good portion of the rest of the day making gingerbread cookies to give to my preschoolers for Christmas, and when Tessa came home, she was pleased to use up the extra dough.

We had Papa John's pizza for dinner (so yummy), and then the amazing key lime pie (SOOO YUMMY!!!).

Here's to another 42!
